Webmail: Working with Mailto: links

Clicking a “mailto” link should open a new message window in your webmail service, but sometimes it doesn’t. Here’s how to fix it for popular browsers:

Gmail in Chrome:

  1. Look for a double diamond icon on the right side of your address bar in Gmail.
  2. Click the icon and select “Allow mail.google.com to open all email links”.
  3. Done! Now “mailto” links should work as expected.

Firefox:

  1. Click the hamburger menu (☰) in the top right corner.
  2. Go to Preferences (Options on Windows) and select Applications.
  3. Type “mailto” in the search bar.
  4. Under “mailto” in the Content Type list, change the Action to “Use Gmail” (or your preferred email provider).
  5. Close the Preferences window (or click OK on Windows).

Safari:

Unfortunately, Safari requires a third-party extension.

  1. Install the Mailto: extension from the App Store.
  2. Once installed, a settings window will open. Choose your preferred email provider.
  3. Close the settings window.
