Don’t Get Stuck! Fixing “Mailto” Links in Your Webmail
Clicking a “mailto” link should open a new message window in your webmail service, but sometimes it doesn’t. Here’s how to fix it for popular browsers:
Gmail in Chrome:
- Look for a double diamond icon on the right side of your address bar in Gmail.
- Click the icon and select “Allow mail.google.com to open all email links”.
- Done! Now “mailto” links should work as expected.
Firefox:
- Click the hamburger menu (☰) in the top right corner.
- Go to Preferences (Options on Windows) and select Applications.
- Type “mailto” in the search bar.
- Under “mailto” in the Content Type list, change the Action to “Use Gmail” (or your preferred email provider).
- Close the Preferences window (or click OK on Windows).
Safari:
Unfortunately, Safari requires a third-party extension.
- Install the Mailto: extension from the App Store.
- Once installed, a settings window will open. Choose your preferred email provider.
- Close the settings window.
