How to check a URL to see if a site seems safe to visit

Stay Safe Online: Check Before You Click

Be cautious with links in emails and texts! Before clicking, take a moment to inspect the web address (URL). Here’s how:

  • Hover over the link (desktop): This often reveals the actual URL without clicking.
  • Hold and copy the link (mobile): Paste it into your browser to see the full address.

Checking Link Safety:

Several tools can help assess a URL’s safety:

Tiny URLs:

Tiny URLs (like Bitly or TinyURL) shorten long links. They’re not inherently unsafe, but caution is still advised:

  • Limited Transparency: You can’t always see the full URL before clicking.
  • Tracking: Senders may use them to track clicks.

How to View the Long URL:

Most legitimate URL shorteners offer preview options:

  • Bit.ly: Add a “+” to the end of the URL (before visiting).
  • TinyURL: Add “preview” between “https://” and “tinyurl.com/…”

Remember: Even with URL checkers, there’s no absolute guarantee of safety. Checking unfamiliar links is crucial to avoid malicious content.
