How to troubleshoot Apple Mail or Outlook email issues in macOS

Isolate Email Client Issues with a New macOS User Account

Having email troubles in Apple Mail or another email client? Don’t despair! Let’s isolate the issue and find a solution.

Testing by Elimination:

One effective troubleshooting technique is testing by elimination. This helps narrow down the problem source.

Creating a Test User Account:

A great way to test is to create a new macOS user account. This provides a clean environment free from potential configuration issues in your main account.

Benefits:

  • Helps determine if the problem originates from corrupted email program storage or cache files in your main user account.
  • Recommended by Apple’s own tech support.

Before You Begin:

  • Gather your email account and server settings.
  • Have your admin username and password handy (accessible in Users preferences).
  • Open your webmail in a browser for comparison.

Steps:

  1. Open the Apple menu and select “System Preferences.”
  2. Go to “Users & Groups.”
  3. Unlock the settings with an admin account.
  4. Click the “+” button and create a new Standard account.
  5. Log out of your current account and log in to the new one.
  6. Skip or set up iCloud as needed. (Step might vary)
  7. If needed, add your email app to the Dock.
  8. Configure your email settings in the new account and test.

Results:

  • Issue resolved in the new account: This suggests corrupted files in your main account. Contact email provider support or explore rebuilding mailboxes within your main account (consult email app documentation for specific steps).
  • Issue persists in the new account: This suggests the problem lies with your email server settings or your email provider. Contact your email provider’s support for further assistance.
